In my last entry I failed to mention my first experience with the Street Fighter 3 series in 1998, as well as some other games I enjoyed alongside the Alpha series.
I didn't mention Street Fighter 3 perhaps because my first time with it was so very forgettable in the first place. I found a stand up of Street Fighter 3 new generation at the Boone NC mall. The place was pretty much a ghost town, save for a kid or two playing a racing game.
I played through arcade mode with Ryu, the comfort zone, as I checked out all the strange new generation of characters. I did well, but ended up losing to Gill a few times before beating him. The game was pretty odd, and I didn't feel it would really catch on at the time. Besides, all of the real action was on the X-men vs. Street Fighter cabs back home at the Bristol Mall.
The first time I read about Capcom's first team up game in EGM I thought it was a hoax. I love comics, and I love Street Fighter, but the two combined was too good to be true. Yet here it was, but what was even better were the people that were actually playing it. Just as the games before it though, it wasn't meant to last. The new gameplay style was fun and exciting, but I found that people just didn't want to stick with it around here. It seemed that when I beat someone, I'd likely never see them again.
Not only was interest in arcades in general dieing faster than ever, but I felt like the desire to do better in games was dieing within people too in the Bristol area.
During my final years of high school I found myself playing a lot of single player adventures, such as the Final Fantasies, Castlevania, Megaman, etc. Again the only fighting game time I got was when Rob came to visit or if I was bored and wanted to see SF endings.
So this entry was kind of random. I just wanted to touch on some of the games I left out before wrapping up high school. I'll be sure to talk in more detail about my other gaming interests in another entry.
Until then.
Bonus:
Holy crap! A game with Xmen AND Street Fighters!
