So without further ado, here are my picks for January 2013:
Movie:
V/H/S - This horror movie, appropriately titled, is made up of a collection of stories presented in a "found tapes" fashion. I really enjoyed this film because of the variety of stories ranging from mythological creature attacks to paranormal encounters. Each "tape" is its own storyline giving the movie a creep show feel to it. I found myself watching it a few times to try and get a better look through the VHS quality. This movie is probably my favorite in the "lost footage has been discovered" horror genre. (Note at the time of this posting, this movie is available on the Netflix instant queue.)
Television:
My tastes in TV seemed to be a bit British this month as my favorite picks are The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret and the Inbetweeners.
The first is the story of a completely unqualified American man who is elected to lead the UK branch of the company he works for in the States. It's a twisted, hilarious tale of misunderstandings and, as the title suggests, horribly poor decisions fueled by Todd Margaret's ignorance of British culture, complete lack of any sort of common sense, and seemingly uncontrollable pathological lying.
The Inbetweeners follows the antics of a group of British teenagers on their quest to finally get laid, which always ends horribly for them. The show will take you back to the most awkward stages of teenage courtship while teaching you a colorful array of vulgar British slang. I love it for this.
Fun fact and random coincidence, Blake Harrison plays one of the more hilarious wankers in both programs. He's funny and definitely worth following.
Handheld games:
Phantasy Star Zero for Nintendo DS. I'm still really addicted to this game. To find out why, check out my review HERE.
Android App:
My biggest time killer on my phone this month has been the Android version of Sonic CD. If you like Sonic CD you can't go wrong with this handheld version. It has perhaps the most precise touch screen controls I've experienced on an action game for smart phones.
It's pretty much the exact same version as the PSN and Xbox Live versions of the game, so for a more in depth look check out my review HERE.
Interesting Art:
I found this image of Sonic and Mega Man which came from an old issue of Gamepro back in the day. Sonic appears as usual from the Genesis/Mega Drive titles but Mega Man looks downright bizzare to say the least. Looks like the artist that did the cover of Mega Man 3 maybe. Anyway, this piece was most interesting to me because of just how odd it is. It kind of has that train wreck that you can't look away from effect to it.
Thanks for reading! Hope to see you next month to share more of my favorite stuff.
