Happy 25th Birthday to the Sega Genesis!

Man, time really does fly, at blast processing speed sometimes. Today marks the 25th anniversary of Sega Genesis release in North America (August 14th, 1989). It's hard to believe it's been that long, or maybe I just like to forget that I'm in my 30's, ha ha. Regardless, I have a lot of fantastic memories of this machine and I thought the best way to celebrate, besides sitting down to play it later, would be to share some of those.

The original Sega Genesis, now commonly referred to as the "Model 1"

It's hard to choose my all time favorite moment playing this machine. It has been 25 years after all, so these are in no particular order. I hope you enjoy and that perhaps they rekindle some of your own favorite memories.

My favorite Sega Genesis memories

-Seeing it for test plays at Hills for the first time. For those that may not recognize the name, Hills is a now defunct super market chain much like Walmart now is today. Just think of it as a Walmart clone up until the mid 90's.

When I first saw the graphics I was blown away. Up until then the majority of my gaming was done on the NES, but the Genesis looked more like the stuff at the arcades. I just couldn't believe it was possible to have graphics like that on something you could take home. It made it hard to go home to the NES that night.

-Playing Sonic the Hedgehog for the first time. Also at Hills in 1991 I got my first chance to play Sonic. I could probably do an entire entry on this experience alone. The graphics, the music, the gameplay, it was just perfect to me. Let's just say that this solidified my need for a Sega Genesis in my life. My NES sure felt like a baby toy after that night, I think I retired Mario for many years after that.

-Graduating to the 16 bit library at the video store. The video store in town always carried a selection of Genesis games since the system premiered. Until I owned one, all we could do is look at the game cases and stare in awe at how cool everything looked. It felt great to finally be able to take those titles home.

-Sonic 2sday. This was the first game I actually remember knowing the release date for and being desperately excited to get my hands on this game. There was so much hype in magazines and on tv that I was about to go nuts. Thankfully Sonic 2 delivered and was more than worth the wait.

-The advertising. The marketing behind the Genesis was pure genius. I loved how they weren't afraid to jab directly at Nintendo, not like some of this "like those other guys" passive aggressive stuff you see today. It wasn't long until you couldn't look at your Genesis without at least hearing the Sega! scream in your head.

-Games made for me. My favorite types of games are of the action and adventure variety, which was in no short supply for the Genesis. I was also an arcade rat, so being able to take arcade ports home was amazing, even though they didn't quite live up to their big brothers at the arcade.

The overall reason why the Genesis is one of my all time favorite consoles is solely thanks to the library. It just has the most of what I'm looking for in a gaming experience. It was fast paced action I craved and the Genesis always had a way to deliver.

My favorite system and one of my all time favorite games

Those are just a handful of my favorite memories. I'm sure more will come to me after I post this, but alas I'm running out of time. The anniversary is almost up and I've got more gaming to do. What are some of your favorite memories of the Genesis? I'd love to hear some of them.

As always, thanks for stopping by!
