By now you've seen the trailer for the new Sonic The Hedgehog game in development, dubbed by some as "Sonic Generations." If you've somehow missed it, check it out below before reading further:
The beginning of the trailer is the usual Sonic cinematic fodder we're used to these days, but what's this at the end? Chubby Sega Genesis era Sonic joins modern day Sonic for a friendly runabout?
It's certainly an interesting trailer that opens up an infinite amount of questions. You can't really speculate much about the game at this point as there aren't any sort of in-game screens or movies available yet.
I guess you could sort of speculate about a possible story for the game though. It is Sega, so it's hard to say how outlandish this yarn will be win fully spun. My guess is that for the 20th anniversary there will be some sort of time travel or dimensional rift plot device that allows the Sonic from now to meet the Sonic from then for an adventure. Perhaps Genesis Sonic and Adventure Sonic were always from alternate dimensions. Maybe this question will be answered if I'm right about this story. Then again, I never really put a whole lot of thought to the Sonic cannon to begin with.
Gameplay is anyone's guess. I would assume from this that both chubby Sonic and modern Sonic are playable. Maybe it'll be a tag-in tag-out sort of offering like Sonic Heroes was. I'm not sure what playing as 2 Sonics would bring to the table though. Maybe while you're modern Sonic you move through the stages in a 3rd person perspective while classic Sonic takes them on from a 2D angle.
Again it's too hard to say at this point without any gameplay hints, so I'll leave it be for now.
I need to get used to saying "classic Sonic" instead of chubby or Genesis, I'm sure that's more politically correct, haha.
